As most of you know I am building a banjo. (perhaps I should say I am assembling a banjo) At any rate I got Craig to do the peghead inlay. Here is just the cutout. Once inlayed, I will post another pic. This guy amazes me. ![]() |

John/Craig, Him look like heap big artistry ![]() Fantastic, with that inlay the banjo won't dare be anything but great. John - did you pick Sitting Bull as it was a "brave" decision to make a banjo? ![]() |

Craig, your technique is amazing -- commanding and dramatic. What are the materials used? Craig S. |

There is no end to Craigs ability! Consider his most recent pieces, Madanna on Brocks guitar, Froggy on the FOLK Guitar and now Sitting Bull, They are all 3 as different as could be! ![]() |

It amazes me that you can get jazzed up about an inlay half way through the process, but then again so can I so that's fair! ![]() Craig S- materials are pretty simple- ivory, ebony, black pearl. The feather is white river pearl, and the top (not cut yet- give me a minute) is a nice piece of figured black pearl. With only four materials you can get a really "photo real" looking piece. I plan on spending a little more time engraving this one to really get it as life like as possible. I didn't do that on Sitting Bear, because it was so big. This one is way smaller. About 1.5 wide, 3.5" tall, so I can maximize on it. This inlay is about 7 hours in so far including the art, based on a 1800's black and white photo. Larry R. has Sitting Bull on the rear headstock of a Gibson banjo in his first edition ART of INLAY book. This is most likely modelled off the same old photo, but it is definitly NOT a copy of Larry's work. They will both look pretty different wen completed. His is actually silverand copper, and has a neat effect. I have a full length fish/butterfly fretboard in the works as well. More images soon. Thanks guys. Craig L. www.handcraftinlay.com |
